BLUR is an Experimental Video Editing Workshop, part of the Paadmaan Video Event, offering a practical exploration into the art of video. This hands-on three-hour session invites participants to explore the creative possibilities of breaking down and reassembling both found and original footage. By playing with rhythm, movement, sound, form, color, and contrast, the workshop aims to push the boundaries of visual storytelling, creating new sensory experiences.
The workshop will cover techniques such as layered cutting and rapid sequential editing. It will also focus on the deeper processes that connect visual material and shape new narratives. These narratives will reflect on the process of video art, the role of found material, and the impact of minimalism and repetition in visual media. We will look at the works of artists like Douglas Gordon, Dara Birnbaum, and Martin Arnold to guide our exploration.
BLUR is open to everyone so no prior experience in filmmaking or editing is needed, and the basics will be taught during the workshop. However, it is also suitable for artists, creators, and students who want to take a deeper approach to experimental editing. Each participant is encouraged to actively join in the creative dialogue and contribute to a collective exploration of the limits of visual storytelling.
The workshop will take place at ROZENSTRAAT, lasting three hours. You can register via [google form], a limited number of places are available.
The workshop will be led by Joanne van Halteren, an Amsterdam based visual artist who works mainly with moving images. She earned her BFA from the Rietveld Academie. Joanneās videos and installations focus on exploring and questioning the connections between marginalized and domesticated territories and species. Her work looks at how various filming, editing, and presentation techniques can bring these subjects out of the margins, with a special emphasis on domestication and the gaze, as well as the domestication of the gaze.
